Apple has just released the specs of the new iPhone. It replaces the current iPhone 3G and now labelled iPhone 3G S. Supposedly "S" meaning Speed. It is available in 16 GB and 32 GB. Apple has played it safe, iPhone 3G S looks exactly the same as the 3G model. They have upgraded the camera to a 3 megapixel, up from 2. The 2 megapixel camera was actually very good, but lacked a flash. I had a Sony Ericsson P990i and Nokia N81 both with 2 megapixel camera's but none were as good as the iPhone 3G's. So I'm pretty sure the new 3 megapixel won't disappoint. Features worth mentioning, a built in digital compass which is made useful for navigation, voice commands, and spotlight which provides a search function across your iPhone. The good news from the OS 3 perspective is that it is much improved compared to the current OS 2.2.1. Much more features are included like MMS, cut copy & paste, being able to take videos, turn by turn navigation is also now supported, internet tethering, landscape keyboard supported in more areas, etc. OS 3 is available to the previous generation iPhones as well. Free for the iPhone, but will cost you if you want it on your iTouch. MMS will not be supported on the 2G model though. The 3G S model will most probably have double the processing power than the 3G, making it even more pleasant to use. The annoying Safari browser should be a blessing to use now. The UI is still amazing, the App Store making the iPhone an even more useful device which can't be rivalled by any other mobile phone manufacturer, the touch screen is a dream to use, it's shiny and beautiful and all in all it should be the perfect device. But is it? It still lacks a physical keyboard which makes typing easier, especially for those who are constantly using email as their main communication method. The Nokia N97 solves this problem by having both a on screen keyboard as well a physical one. But can it stand up to the mighty iPhone when it comes to UI and the ease of use with touch? Only time will tell. I await the iPhone 3G S vs Nokia N97 battle with anticipation!
